Why a Shooting Range Has Its Own Shop

Every day on our firing line we see what holds up and what doesn't. Safety glasses that fog. Ear defenders that start pinching after an hour, and a holster the pistol just won't draw cleanly from. Who the Shop Is For

Four kinds of buyer, mostly. You'll probably spot yourself.

• Hunters getting ready for the season: clothing, boots, optics, and knives in one basket, collected in one trip.

Hunting Clothing: More Than a Thousand Products

The biggest department in the shop, by a distance: more than a thousand products. Parforce makes up the largest share, with close to 400 clothing items on its own, alongside Highmoor, Reitmayer, Luis Steindl, Merkel Gear, Wald & Forst, and Deerhunter. Jackets and coats, trousers, knitwear, and base layers each have their own section, so you don't have to scroll through the whole lot to find a warm layer for under the jacket.

On a hunt, clothing has one job: to let you sit in a high seat for hours without freezing. Think in layers. A warm base layer, a mid layer, then an outer jacket that doesn't rustle every time you reach for the rifle.

Hunting Boots and Footwear

The footwear section has around 100 models, including two names plenty of hunters already know: Meindl and Hanwag. Meindl boots run from €157.99 to €548.99. Not cheap. You'll spend whole mornings in them, though, and boots are the worst place in your kit to economise. Buy cheap, buy twice. In boots, you get cold feet as well.

Parforce, Wald & Forst, and Kamik are there too. Before you order, think about how you actually hunt. A driven hunt means hours on your feet, a high seat means hours sitting still in the cold, and those call for different boots. Hunting Knives

The knives department stocks around 200 knives. Morakniv has the widest choice. Swedish, from €20.99 to €128.99, and the knife we'd hand a first-time hunter. There are also Gerber, Böker, Herbertz, and Parforce knives, plus Accusharp sharpeners, because a blunt knife is the one that slips.

Gun Care and Shooting Accessories

The shooting department has nearly 900 products. At its core is gun care and cleaning, with more than 300 products, over half of them from Ballistol.
