Iconic Long Guns: Which Legendary Long Guns You Can Actually Shoot in Riga

You want a straight answer about iconic guns, and the internet keeps handing you a shrug. Type "where can you shoot an AK-47 in Europe" into your phone and Riga comes up. So do Prague, Budapest, and Kraków. Nobody gives you the actual list: which rifles are on the wall, what each one honestly is, what five rounds costs, and whether the famous name on the receiver is the real thing. That list is below, written by the people who clean the guns afterwards.

One thing up front. Plenty of famous guns exist twice over: the military original, and a civilian version built to handle like it. Where that's true of ours, this guide says so out loud.

TL;DR: You can fire a Kalashnikov, an SKS carbine, an H&K from the MP5 family, two rifles on the AR-15 platform, a pump-action shotgun built on the Mossberg 500 design, and an H&K precision rifle at GunRange.lv, in a 730 m² underground bunker five minutes from Riga's Old Town. Can you actually shoot an AK-47 in Riga?

Yes. The AK-47 is on the arsenal wall and bookable online, at €4 a shot with a five-round minimum.

That's the short answer. The longer one starts with the fact that "AK-47" is doing an enormous amount of work as a phrase.

The Kalashnikov, and the carbine it replaced

Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the rifle in 1947, and the Soviet Armed Forces accepted it in early 1949. The original was chambered for the 7.62×39mm cartridge. Then it went everywhere: something like 75 million AK-47s have been made, and roughly 100 million rifles of Kalashnikov pattern all told.

Here's the pedantry that matters. In the West, almost any rifle with that silhouette gets called an AK-47. Strictly, the name belongs to the original receiver types. Alongside the AK-47 itself we run three Molot Vepr rifles. The Vepr line is built on a heavier RPK-pattern receiver. Same family, different bones.

Next to it sits a quieter piece of history. The CKC, better known as the SKS, was designed by Sergei Simonov between 1941 and 1944 and went into mass production in 1949, the same year the AK was accepted. Both were built around the same 7.62×39mm cartridge, and for a few years the Soviet Army issued both. Then the AK won: select fire and a bigger detachable magazine simply suited the job better. So the SKS became the rifle that lost a competition most people don't know happened. You can still shoot it here, at the same €4 a shot.

The MP5 family, and what ours honestly is

You've seen an MP5 even if you've never heard the name. Film S.W.A.T. teams have been kicking in doors holding one for forty years. Heckler & Koch began development in 1964, the design was adopted in 1966, and over forty nations have since issued it to military, police, and intelligence units. It was built around the 9×19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge rather than a rifle round. The short MP5K arrived in 1976 with the barrel cut down for close quarters.

The one on our arsenal wall is the H&K SP5K, which our own arsenal page describes as the civilian, semi-automatic version of the MP5K. It is semi-automatic only. One trigger pull, one round. Nobody empties a magazine in three seconds here, whatever the films promised you. What you get instead is the real weight and the real mechanics of a design that's been in service for six decades. You'll feel every shot land separately.

The AR-15 platform, and why beginners shoot it best

Eugene Stoner designed the AR-15 in 1956 at ArmaLite, as a lighter sibling to the AR-10, and ArmaLite sold the design to Colt in 1959. The platform is nominally chambered in .223 Remington or 5.56×45mm NATO and shares its core design with the military M16 and M4. The difference sits in one part. Civilian rifles on the pattern have no selective-fire mechanism, so semi-automatic is all they do.

We run two: the Bushmaster XM-15 from the United States and the H&K MR223 from Germany. Both are civilian semi-automatic rifles on that platform, not military M16s, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. They're also the two long guns most first-timers shoot best. The recoil is mild and your eye finds the sights without anyone telling it where to look. First groups on paper, usually.

Shotguns, and a family argument

The Mossberg 500 has been in continuous production since 1961. O.F. Mossberg & Sons have built roughly 11 million of them, as a pump-action shotgun in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 bore. Sixty-five years on one design. Its military descendant, the 590A1, went on to serve with the United States military.

The one you'll shoot here is its budget sibling, the Maverick 88, and almost nobody spots the family resemblance. Maverick is Mossberg's budget line, and the two designs share many parts; the most visible difference is a cross-bolt safety instead of a tang safety. At €2.50 a shot, a sixty-five-year pedigree comes cheap. Two Italian Fabarm pump guns sit beside it, in case you want a second opinion.

The iconic guns on the wall, priced

Every price is per shot, with a five-round minimum on each weapon. Calibres are as listed on each weapon's own arsenal page; the Molot Vepr and Vepr-1 V are marked TBC while their listings are confirmed. The Mossberg 500A appears on the arsenal list but is currently marked unavailable, so it isn't included here.

If you only fire one

If you're only firing one of these iconic guns, pick by what you want out of it, not by the name.

• For the story: the AK-47. It's the one everybody at dinner will ask about afterwards.
• For hitting the target: an AR-15-platform rifle, either the Bushmaster XM-15 or the H&K MR223. Forgiving of a first-timer's grip in a way the older rifles aren't.
• For the noise: a pump-action shotgun. Racking it makes the sound everyone in the room recognises.
• For nerves, or a younger shooter: the CZ 512 Tactical or ISSC MK22 in .22LR. Almost no recoil, €1.50 a shot, and nobody flinches.

Rifle, carbine, shotgun: what the words actually mean

Three words cover almost every iconic gun in that table. Learn them and the wall stops being a blur of names.

• Rifle: a long gun with a spiralled bore that spins the projectile for accuracy. The AK-47, the Vepr family, and both AR-15-platform rifles are rifles.
• Carbine: a rifle with a shortened barrel, easier to handle indoors and in vehicles. The SKS is one. So are the pistol-calibre carbines, the ADC AR9 and the Ruger PC.
• Shotgun: a smoothbore firing a shell, usually of multiple pellets. The Maverick and the two Fabarms. Pump-action means you work the action yourself between shots, by hand, with your whole arm.

That's the entire vocabulary. The rest is just names.

What it takes to fire one here

These conditions are not negotiable.

• You do not need a firearms licence to shoot the range's own guns.
• You do not need any previous experience.
• You do need a valid identity document: a passport or a national ID card. A driver's licence is not accepted. Without it you cannot shoot.
• The minimum age is 18, or 12 with parental supervision.
• Drugs, alcohol, and any other intoxicating substances are prohibited on the range. You must be sober to shoot.
• In a shooting package the instructor loads the weapon for you, and every action happens on the instructor's command.

One instructor covers up to six shooters, so a group of six books one slot. All of it happens underground, in 730 m² of Soviet-era military bunker, five minutes on foot from Old Town.
